Already suffering a public relations meltdown, Belize Electricity Limited continues to be plagued by blackouts. At 1:57 this morning, San Pedro lost power because of a ground fault between BEL’s Maskall substation and the riser on the submarine cable which powers the island. Power was restored to part of the island using standby generators at 6:37 am, but power wasn’t fully restored to the island until 2:30 this afternoon.

And it’s not just the island because at 9:37 this morning, a damaged underground cable caused a blackout to parts of New Road, Victoria Street, North Front Street, Cleghorn Street, and Farmer’s Market. And the blackouts don’t end there, villages along the major highways have also been experiencing blackouts and BEL is similarly working to resolve the technical issues.

Many persons in the public have expressed skepticism about the series of calamities, but the Prime Minister said yesterday that up to Tuesday the PUC had certified that all of the outages were legitimate.
