And while there are about half a dozen other football camps – there are only few karate summer camps. It is at the Martial Arts Academy where children from ages 5 and up have been learning the fine arts of self-defense and self-discipline. We visited the camp today.

Keith Swift Reporting,
The training happens inside the Martial Arts Academy’s Dojo on St. James Street.

Micah Vernon, Green Belt
“We are teaching them the basic like how you do kicks, punches, reverse punch and stuff like that and we teaching them rules, daily lifestyle discipline and stuff.”

Adrian Canul, 2nd degree Brown Belt
“Right now they are all starting at the white belt level so they are just learning the easy stuff. It has been hectic because some of them are just starting to learn so you have to work with them so they have the best technique.”

Dion Vernon, Blue Belt
“We’re teaching them self-defense and basically sparring. We do this to keep them out of trouble. Instead of having them giving trouble around

the neighbourhood, they come here to find something to do over the summer.”

Combined these instructors have 20 years of experience in Marshall Arts.

Micah Vernon,
“I’ve been in karate three years now. I am one away from a brown belt.”

Adrian Canul,
“I started from when I was in Infant one at Holy Redeemer so I have been doing it for fourteen years.”

Keith Swift,
“Why do you like it so much?”

Adrian Canul,
“I like it because it helps me to be disciplined and it helps in self-defense so in case anyone tries to rob me or anything I can defend myself.”

Sensei Leon Guild says karate is the perfect summer sport.

Micah Vernon,
“It is fun and its one way to stay out of trouble, it is the best thing. It helps you to stay physical and fit.”

Dion Vernon,
“Basically its fun, it is very healthy, it keeps them in shape and it is an after school activity that you can really do.”

Keith Swift,
“How can people sign up their kids?”

Sensei Leon Guild, 2nd degree Black Belt
“They can come here at #2 St. James Street in the King’s Park area or they can contact me at 666-5084.”

It is $15 to register and $25 per week. The classes are during the day. You contact Sensei Leon Guild to sign up at 666-5084 or just visit the academy on St. James Street.
