Chico Ramos calls himself the crowned godfather of punta – and that’s not just hype or an empty boast, he is after all the man who wrote “Conch Soup” – which is the most popular punta song in the world – just ask Banda Blanca from Honduras who ripped it from Chico. But even though he’s a legend with 32 years performing and playing music, Chico Ramos isn’t resting on his laurels; he’s still productive and reaching out to new audiences. He told us today it’s a process of relationship building that’s like hand washing hand.

Chico Ramos, Punta Rock Artist
“I di sing it now that hand wash hand, people be good to me, they give me things, they help me out here and there in any possible way so that is the reason why I write this song. Right now I feel that my role is to stay positive and give us some positive message so my CDs from now have to be positive because people feel like punta is a nasty dance but I have to show them where we have the good side too and that is the side I want to tek out now.”

Jules Vasquez,
“And it has to have that rhythm.”

Chico Ramos,
“Well that rhythm deh deh and this CD has a worldwide rhythm, it is the whole Caribbean flavour. It is not really that hardcore, it is more a Caribbean flavour so that everybody can get the sense and enjoy it. We have to try commercialize the thing now, this thing big now, it is bigger than we and it is not only we one the listen now, it is the whole world the listen so now we have to, it is like how reggae mi start, you see where reggae is now – that is the area where we want to go right now.”

Chico’s new album is in stores now.
