If you believe the boys of St. John’s College are just waiting for the weekends to have fun…....think again. Quite a number of these young men are busily working to help others in need. Such was the case of Maria Castillo, a mother of eight children one who just happens to be a student of SJC. Late this evening we caught up with school representatives and the lucky family who are the recipients of brand new wooden home. It is a gift from the students involved in SJC’s community outreach programme.
Bernaldino Pech, Director- SJC Outreach Community Program
“It is one of the many projects that we do but this one has a special connection to our heart because it touches us the boys directly. Many times we can see the expression when they come in on a Friday to look at bare ground and say you know, we are going to build here, we are going to build it in three days and to see the transformation happen and the transformation even in what they field as expressed many times through their journals. Its incredible and to be involved in something that touches lives is certainly beneficial and I am sure it is something that stays with them for the rest of their lives.”
Jacqueline Godwin,
“What touched me was actually seeing the emotion that overwhelmed the homeowner, the gift of this home done by SJC students. This must have been heart warming for you.”
Maria Coyi, Headmaster – SJC
“Yes to hear she expressing in Spanish that it is a dream come true for her. She has eight children and that is a tremendous task for her to raise these children and to build a home. The home they built for her, for her its something that she will cherish because on her own she couldn’t do it and I think having the boys come and help, for three days she saw that the enthusiasm it brought joy to her and it brought joy to us too because for them it is an accomplishment, they see for themselves that they can build a home.”
Through its community outreach programme, SJC plans to construct one home per year. Today’s house was the third.
