Tonight we note the passing of a fellow broadcaster, a long time senior government worker and a fervent nationalist, Rudy Castillo. Castillo whose career started at the government radio station served in a in various capacities within the Public Service for over forty years. At the Tribute to Patriots in 2006, when he was conferred with an honour, Allan Usher presented his commendation – and he tidily recaps Mr. Rudy’s contributions.
Allan Usher,
“In his early 20s he left SJC and the teaching profession to join the colonial civil service, touched by the dream of an independent Belize then so long and so far away. He served at several journalism posts including various at Radio Belize. For a long time he was the Chief Information Officer and later on Permanent Secretaries for so many Ministries. He concluded his civil service career as the first Cabinet Secretary for the newly independent nation of Belize. He transtitoned to our fledging diplomatic corps setting up our first mission in London. His resume reads like many others, he served nearly 40 years but there is a difference, he was the difference. Nationalism alone could not have carried Belize to its rightful place. It needs people like Mr. Rudy to run the backroom machinery.”
An Official Funeral Service for Rudy Castillo will be held on Monday March 22nd, 2010 at 2pm at our Lady of Guadalupe Co-Cathedral Church in the City of Belmopan.
