A number of concerned government workers called our newsroom today concerned that they didn’t get paid as expected. Now, public officers are not usually paid on the nineteenth of the month – but the tradition at the end of the fiscal year has been that they get two pay checks in one. They got paid half last week and expected the other half this week. But that isn’t how it worked out; there was no pay to collect today – and those who called confessed their fear that they would not get paid because government didn’t have the money.
Today, CEO in the Prime Minister’s Office Audrey Wallace told us that’s not the case; she said the money is secured and it is programmed to be paid to teachers on Wednesday the 24th and Public Officers on Friday the 26th. She says a circular to this effect had been sent out – but she concludes that it probably had not received wide enough circulation. Our sources say they have seen no such circular.
