In our New Year's Eve newscast, we showed you the Wanaragua dance as brammers form Dangriga came to shake things up right in front of our studio.
Well, that small scene was magnified many times over in a major culturel celebration on Sunday January 2nd at the Y-Not Island in Dangriga Town.
It was the first ever Dance Jankunu Festival. Seven camps participated but at the end of the day the judges selected Ligemeri Wanaragua from Seine Bight as the first place winner and coming in second and third place respectively: Stephen Valentine's Group from Back-a-town and Ecumenical College.
There was also a junior competition in which Neville Lopez Jr. from Seine Bight was declared the winner. All top winners received cash prize. The Jankunu also known as the Wanaragua aimed at using the dance and the festival as a tool for cultural and economic development.
It is hoped that this will not only enhance the quality of Jankunu performances but also become an annual event. The competition was organized and funded by NICH, NGC, The Dangriga Town Council along with the private sector and this video is form Dangriga Cable Vision….
