Today Foreign Minister, Eamon Courtenay spoke on Belize's first Governor General. He explained why he believes Dame Minita Gordon is more than deserving of a state funeral - and three days of mourning - considering her contribution:

Hon. Eamon Courtenay, Minister of Foreign Affairs

"Dame Minita as you know is our first governor general, she excelled in her service to our country, first as a teacher, educator, and then as the head of stat4e. Her body will be coming and it is gong to be a three day event, which I think gives importance to the very very sad occurrence of her passing. I believe that most Belizeans who knew Dr Gordon found her to be a very humble very respectful very respectable and upright Belizean, and I feel like having a state funeral for her is properly according to her, the right and respect that she is due."
