And while young Kristel showed her patriotism this past weekend, one Belizean artist who's resident in Trinidad shows hers through her paintings. Rachel Heusner memorializes everyday Belizean scenes through her art, and starting tomorrow, you'll be able to see and purchase them. Her first joint exhibit with her son opens at the Bliss Center at 5:00 tomorrosw, but we spoke to her about it today:

Rachel Heusner, Artist
"So the exhibit comprised of myself and my son. He's 18, he just started painting as well. And it's pieces from around Belize, things that depict Belizean life. Very interesting pieces I would say that tell stories about, you know, our culture and a little bit about the country."

"What is it about our country and our culture that drew you in this artistic way that you see it and you say I have to paint that?"

"Well, I grew up seeing a lot of this stuff. And then, you know, as an older person too, sometimes things play on your memory, things that remind you of your childhood, or just simple things about life that is a bit quirky and makes us smile."

"It is a good time to show because there's a lot of people that are visiting, Belizeans that come home and a lot of them want things that they could take back. And who wouldn't like to take back a piece of art?"

"One is like this one that's right behind me, represents the Triangle Building. It's no longer there and a lot of the history. I mean, recently I've been hearing a lot of talk about people and buildings disappearing from Belize."

"So I try to record those pieces. I mean, even if we don't have them in physical, it's nice to have a nice recording of the picture in a painting. It's always nice to see people showing appreciation for art and for things that are, you know, aesthetic, that, you know, it's a different aspect of life."

"You know, it's not just listening to music. It's something that's static, yes, but most of the time it touches a chord with people on the inside."

The exhibit will run until the 20th, and there is no charge to enter.
