Last year the University of Belize almost collapsed due to funding shortfalls - so you can imagine how administrators felt last week when they discovered that a significant quantity of money had been misappropriated from the Adult and Continuing Education Department.

Last week an audit committee discovered that $116,000 Thousand dollars had gone missing between August of 2002 and January of 2004. The case has now been handed over to the police and university officials including Provost Dr. Dorian Barrow and Personnel Manager Dudley Heredia who had no comment today.

But the University did issue one telling release, which states that Mohammad Kamaruzzman is no longer authorized to conduct any business on behalf of the University of Belize. Kamaruzzman was formerly with the Faculty of Adult and Continuing Education. The University operates on a $15 to $20 million annual budget.
