Belize's health authorities are on alert because PAHO has confirmed that Guatemala is reporting an epidemic of acute viral gastroenteritis. 26,000 cases resulting in 22 deaths have been diagnosed in eight areas of Guatemala including Peten, but so far, none of those have come from Melchor.

What is gastroenteritis? Well a lot more than just "pain - a belly". The symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and possibly, but not necessarily fever. Local health authorities warn that the virus is most dangerous in children under 5 years and adults older than 65. The best way to make sure you don't get it is to wash hands well, wash vegetables, and use Clorox to clean dishes and cooking surfaces.
