Late word from Corozal this evening is that there has been in a truce in the food fight between management and students at the Corozal Junior College. This afternoon Chief Education Officer Maud Hyde mediated a meeting between school board and student government representatives.
As we reported earlier this week, management closed the school gates supposedly in the name of security. The students however claimed it was in an attempt to force them to buy from the school's cafeteria which they claim sells substandard and expensive food. The situation came to a head on Tuesday and Wednesday when defiant students protested in front of the school's gate.
At today's meeting, the school's management agreed to open the front pedestrian gate. There is a but though because a security guard will be placed there and only students with identification cards will be allowed to enter or exit. The school also agreed to conduct an audit of the cafeteria and snack bar. Not a financial audit though, the students are asking for a review of the prices and quality of food offered to students. Student Government President Endu Opuobori stopped short of declaring a victory today, she told us this is a stepping stone towards their greater goals.
