Tourism Awareness Week continued today with the annual Social Studies Quiz Contest for primary school students. The competition began in November of last year with zone eliminations and it finished today when the top 12 finishers, 2 from each district, squared off at the Bliss Center. Here's how it all ended.
Keith Swift Reporting,
This morning 12-year-old Cesar Correa from St. Edmund Campion R.C. School in Teakettle Village reaped the harvest of months of studying when he won the tourism board's social studies quiz competition.
Cesar Correa, 1st Place
"I am number one in social studies so I am very happy."
Keith Swift,
You had a paper with one hundred and sixty or more questions.
Cesar Correa,
"It was 170."
Keith Swift,
How did you prepare for the quiz?
Cesar Correa,
"I studied hard every night. Sometimes I stayed up until 10:30 studying until I got all of them, all the questions."
12-year-old Suleima Patt from Yo Creek R.C. School in Yo Creek Village placed second. She also studied hard but stumbled on this question:
Emcee: What does DFC stand for?
The answer is of course the Development Finance Corporation and Suleima should have known because… her father used to work there.
Suleima Patt, 2nd Place
"I knew that question but I got so nervous. I couldn't get that answer."
Suleima's Mom,
"Her father used to work over there. I don't know how she didn't get it."
And while Suleima was nervous - Xu'xek Novelo from Hummingbird Elementary School was just happy. She placed third and says it was a learning experience.
Xu'xek Novelo, 3rd Place
"I learnt a lot because then I had to do a lot of research for the reserved round so I learnt a lot. I feel really really good. It is like 'wow, I got third place.' It is really fun."
Cesar Correa who placed first took home a computer among other prizes. Second place finisher Suleima Patt won a cell phone and Xu'xec Novelo who placed third won an mp3 player. The schools of the top three finishers also were awarded plaques.
