As primary school students get ready to go on their long summer break this is the time when many parents begin to think about what activities will be available to keep those idle minds and hands occupied and out of trouble. Well a group called ‘Growing the Future’ might have the answer. Director Peter Lacey says the idea is not to over burden the children with school work but to keep them sharp with their knowledge. This year a total of three hundred boys and girls are expected to participate.
Peter Lacey, Director
“I offer an alternative where parents can send their kids for 6 of the 8 weeks vacation and they have something constructive to do. It sharpens their minds which takes them into the upcoming school year.”
Jacqueline Godwin,
What lessons do you cover?
Peter Lacey,
“I cover reading, mathematics, and I also do environmental education in the fourth week of the program.”
Jacqueline Godwin,
Have you done a study to show if these programs you hold every year do help the kids that you serve?
Peter Lacey,
“Well we haven’t done an official survey but this year we are taking the initiative to do an official evaluation of the students but we’ve gotten positive feedback from parents that have sent their kids to the program.”
Registration will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. If you would like more information you can call 622 – 9317, 620 -6639 or 203 – 4105.
