Last week Donna Belgrave stood on the protest line beside Hirian Good. Good had been terminated from her job as a school warden at Trinity Methodist School because she was a PUP. After four days on the protest line around the clock, government caved and she was offered a job by Housing Minister Michael Finnegan. But on Monday she told us she wouldn’t accept the job – at least not yet. That is because she wanted a job for her comrade Donna Belgrave – another single mother school warden who had been fired because of politics. Now, there’s hope for Belgrave, she met with Education Minister Patrick Faber today. He told us what happened.
Hon. Patrick Faber, Minister of Education
“I met with her this morning and basically Miss Donna lives in Mahogany Heights and as you know we are opening a new school there. I was impressed with the fact that she has been fighter over the time that she did lose her job as a school warden. She in fact took it on herself to get training in child care, through the Women’s Department she told me, and so I thought it fit if she lives in Mahogany Heights and we are opening the new school there that she may be able to get some thing to do there. I am currently looking into that so that we can utlilize her services there, especially seeing that many of the people who live in Mahogany Heights are working in Belize City and the kids will have to stay afterwards in the evening sometimes unattended so I am confident that something will be able to be worked out.”
Keith Swift,
“When will that school be opened?”
Hon. Patrick Faber,
“Monday as far as I know.”
Charlie Good who met with the Prime Minister on Monday told us told us this evening that he and his wife have suspended their protest. They will both report to the Housing and Planning Department on Monday. Good told us they haven’t formerly accepted the job offers but will go there with quote “an open mind.”
