We told you he would, and he did; despite calls from the Teachers Union, Education Minister Patrick Faber took the proposals for the Teachers’ Commission to Cabinet today. It was approved and will go to the house shortly. Faber has said he hopes to get House approval by year’s end.

A Cabinet release today stressed that there will be opportunities for further dialogue both before and after the bill is taken to the House of Representatives.

That line is an effort to reach out to the Teachers Union which had requested that Faber put off taking it to the Joint Education Act and Rules Working Committee. Faber declined on the basis that the package of revisions to the Education Act have been in consultations for more than a year – and in the final week – he held extended consultations with the Teachers Union and the Bishop’s Commission.

It’s left to be seen if the Teachers Unions will be satisfied with House consultations – up to yesterday – the had not come up with a formal response to Faber’s refusal to extend consultations. If you want to hear more about his reasoning – a 7 minute statement form the Education minister is set to air after the news....

In other Cabinet news, there will be a new bridge in Cristo Rey Village in the Cayo District. The bridge will serve villagers in the communities of Cristo Rey, San Antonio, and Seven Miles and will be an important connection in times of flooding. Completion is scheduled for the end of the year.
