For weeks it’s been rumored that President of the University of Belize Santos Mahung will be fired imminently. But it hasn’t happened. However, that is not because the board doesn’t want him fired; they do. But it’s not that simple. The Prime Minister explained what’s keeping him hired.
Jules Vasquez,
“Things are in motion to have him removed.”
Hon. Dean Barrow,
“Yes because that is the recommendation of the board, that is the request of the board. It is just that I can’t accede to that request unless I have looked at the material, considered the man’s representation, and have been convinced that the board is right when it says that he has failed in A, B, C, and D. So I am taking legal advice because this is a due process type of exercise where the President has had certain allegations made against him, he has responded to those allegations in writing. I have to sort through all the materials, I have to apply the correct legal principles and make a determination. I really don’t know which way that determination will go.”
Mahung took up the post as president in November of 2007.
