But for many fourth formers, those prospects seem far away. That's because their last year of high school - already done by distance learning - has been disrupted since some of their teachers are on strike.

But Fonseca said the ministry is not letting them slip through the cracks and has found other ways to ensure they complete their SBA's and get that last bit of learning in before summer starts.

"It's unfortunate that the strike has affected some of that but we have monitoring officers who have taken the slack and it is unfortunate that students who are in fourth form, down to their last two weeks, have gotten caught up in the strike issue and some of their teachers were not present for these final two weeks where they needed support to finalize their preparation for CXC's and SBA's but monitoring officers who we have in place have stepped in and are supporting their efforts so we are confident that that will proceed unimpeded."
