On Saturday the Taiwanese Embassy held its Orientation for its largest cohort of scholarship recipients yet. A total of 66 Belizean students, 45 of which are Taiwan ICDF Scholarship program awardees and 21 who received MOFA Taiwan Scholarships are recipients. The Taiwan Embassy confirms that this is the highest number of Belizean awardees since the programme started in 2002. The Scholarship recipients range from tropical agriculture, to public health, mechanical engineering and computer science.
And while the scholarships are welcomed by the students and their family - we note that there is some pressure from officialdom in Belize for Taiwan to stop granting Belizean students work permits when they are done with their studies. A high percentage of Belizean scholarship recipients remain in Taiwan when they are finished with their studies.
