It was made into law almost two decades ago - but the National Accreditation Council was just launched today at the House of Culture in Belize City.

It's a body created to oversee and enforce academic standards, especially for tertiary institutions. The Minister of Education told us more:

Francis Fonseca, Minister of Education
"You know, it's work that started more than two decades ago. so we're very, very happy that, you know, we, after a long pause of over, you know, a decade, we were able to reactivate, the National Accreditation Council when we came back into office, into 2020. and we've been working with ATLIB, the Association of Tertiary Level Institutions of Belize. We made some amendments to the act that was passed way back in 2006. And so, you know, it's all about ensuring quality standards of education in Belize."

"But generally it has to do with improving the quality of education, making sure that, our institutions, both foreign institutions and local and local institutions, that there are clear criteria, in terms of the degrees, the certificates that they are offering, to our people."
