And the teachers are outraged at these surprise deductions. One teacher told us off record that over $1,300 was deducted - about half of his salary, meaning he is unable to pay his utility bills at this time. Another teacher, Rose Avila, said that if the government was going to take it back, they never should have given it in the first place. She's also concerned about the fact that it's classified as a miscellaneous deduction. She spoke to us this evening via Zoom.
Avila says the union is working very closely with them to resolve the matter.
