Belize today assumed the presidency of CCAD - the Central American Commission of Environment and Development. Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment Johnny Briceno now heads that arm of SICA and today at a press conference he emphasized what Belize's role will be. Key among the issues set for discussion is the fisheries issue in Southern Belize with Guatemalan and Honduran fisher folk exploiting the marine resources, as well as the issue of garbage which originates in other Central American countries and eventually ends up on our beaches.
Hon. Johnny Briceno, CCAD President
"...it is something that has to be done jointly between governments and NGOs. It is not just one country's problem. We have been working together with the three governments. We have been working and we have looked at trying to address that issue through the MBRS and working on phase two and in phase two we will be looking at trying to create management areas where the border areas, we can manage those areas jointly when it comes to issues for instance of these incursions and trying to protect the activities that are happening in those areas."
Key in the discussions of CCAD is the harmonization of the region's environmental policies and legislation to ensure that they coincide with each other.
