Earth Day was yesterday but the Belize City Council celebrated it today. Starting this morning – the council began planting mahogany trees in school yards across the city. Councillor Phillip Willoughby is leading the effort and he says they plan to plant trees in 29 school yards.

Phillip Willoughby, City Councillor
“We received 35 or 36 trees thereabout and the idea is to engage the students about the environment, emergency management, and how they can support the role of NEMO after disaster and don’t litter. We are very keen about keeping the environment green, especially in Belize City and hence going to the schools, doing the public education about sanitation to have a tree planted in their backyard or a place of their choice and for them to care for it and they will get the Philip Willoughby award for taking care of this tree.”

The remaining trees will be planted between tomorrow and Monday.
