The work to rescue Monkey River from rapid beach erosion has begun. As we’ve been reporting – 500 feet of the Monkey River’s shore has been consumed and 7 homes were in clear and present danger of collapsing.
The earthquake delayed plans but the work began this week where community members with the help of the Ministry of Works started construction a sea defense of botans and tyres. This is only stage one and it is costing $135,000. It has been funded by the Ministry of Works.
Now the defense is up, stage will be to fill the area within the tyres and botans to try reclaim some of the lost land. They also hope to tackle the root of the problem which villagers believe is due to water from the Monkey River that has been diverted for agricultural purposes.
