Senator Juliet Thimbriel, her eighty thousand dollar loan from the Ministry of Housing has been a subject of popular discussion and media speculation for weeks. And while many question whether she should have been first in line to get a loan, seems to us, that’s the nature of political decision making – after a war, soldiers are the first to be rewarded. But recently, much of the discussion has centered over whether she is actually re-paying that loan. Now that’s a matter of honesty, not politics, and earlier this week when we spoke to Housing Minister Michael Finnegan we asked whether she is making repayments.

Hon. Michael Finnegan, Minister of Housing
“Senator Thimbriel’s loan is being paid as we speak. Her loan is being paid through her salary from the National Assembly and I heard also about the article and I suggest to Senator Thimbriel that he needs to take legal action against these people.”

Jules Vasquez,
Do you have proof that the loan is being paid?

Hon. Michael Finnegan,
“I know it is being paid. I am the Minister of Housing.”

Jules Vasquez,
You know but the only way I can know is by proof. You can prove it. Can it be proven, is there a ledger?

Hon. Michael Finnegan,
“You know I am a man of veracity and integrity so why need worry.”

Jules Vasquez,
But I am not satisfied taking your word Mr. Finnegan. I know you are a man of your word but I am a man of proof.

Hon. Michael Finnegan,
“Well then we will invite you to go to the Ministry of Housing in Belmopan and I will authorize you to seek out the documentation.”

We’re awaiting that appointment to review those payments.
