Yesterday we told you about the dead adult female Manatee and the missing calf that had been abandoned when its mother was killed by a passing boat.
Well today, the Coastal Zone Unit was called out to the area behind Bayview Oasis on the coast where a manatee calf had been seen. This is very close to the area where the nursing mother manatee had been killed.
And indeed when they got there Nicole Auil and Jamal Glavez saw a calf in the area but as they started up their engine, the frightened manatee calf raced out of the canal, not to be seen again.
So, they continue to look for him or her and if you've seen the calf bobbing along the coast near the Haulover bridge, you can call the Coastal Zone Office at 223-5739 or a manatee rescue hotline at 607-5038.
