Biologists from the Clearwater Marine Aquarium Research Institute were able to save another Manatee. The mature female, was found just north of the Sittee River mouth on Monday, a week after she'd been reported as entangled. She'd been dragging a boat bumper and was also found to have a large fishing hook lodged inside the right side of her mouth, and another fresh injury caused by a similar hook on the right flipper.
The team successfully removed the hook and cleaned and treated the wounds. The injuries were not life-threatening and she was able to be released in the immediate area where she was rescued.
If you'd like to report an injured, orphaned, sick, or entangled manatee; please call the Clearwater Marine Aquarium Research Institute at 615-3838 or the Belize Fisheries Department at 224-4552.
