We asked Minister Fonseca about what he thinks of his prime minister's performance in Glasgow. Well - not surpassingly - he gives his PM an A+. But he said that while Belize is making waves at COP26, all that will count for naught if the larger countries don't reduce their own carbon emissions to really make a change in the environment.
Hon. Francis Fonseca, Minister of Education
"Yeah, no, I was I was very proud of what prime minister. I think he very forcefully and effectively delivered a message not only on behalf of Belize, but on behalf of small island developing states and vulnerable countries like Belize. It's a critically important issue. It's one that we take very seriously. I know we've had many discussions at the cabinet level. So the prime minister deliver that message very effectively. Again, we have to wait and see. The proof will be in the in the eating if you like. You know, whenever we have these conferences, the big countries who are real emitters who are really responsible for the problem are facing, they say the right things. They deliver all the right talking points, but then they walk back on those commitments and promises. So I think our countries like Belize, the Caribbean, Caricom, will become very skeptical, very cynical, justifiably so. But we are hopeful. We are hopeful that because of the strong representation we've gotten from our leaders and from CARICOM, you know, Mia Mottley in Barbados, who heads CARICOM, a very strong, passionate statement. We're hopeful that these countries will understand and appreciate the urgency of this matter."
