In early September, we told you that the Prime Minister was in Berlin, Germany with a delegation of technical experts to explore solutions in managing waste, particularly sargassum. And this past Tuesday - in its first meeting in more than three - possibly four weeks(!), Cabinet approved the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Belize and Variodin AG, a German technology company. According to a release, this MOU will capitalize on and mitigate the growing threat of sargassum to the region's tourism industry by using it to produce energy. We await details...since the issue has long been that even if Belize had a usable volume of Saragassum, accumulating all of it for conversion to energy could prove costly.
