Only 13 days into 2026 and the Tapir Project is reporting the first tapir death - except this time it is a double fatality because she was pregnant. According to a Facebook post, reps from the Tapir Project were called out early this morning to an area along the Hummingbird Highway near the Sibun Bridge. During the necropsy, they discovered a full-term calf weighing 20 pounds.

In their post, they state that as roads continue to expand, wildlife like tapirs are increasingly at risk. They then urge drivers to speak up and drive with care.
