In October, we brought you the story of 10-year-old Jevon Mahler who had been kicked in the face by a circus horse. For Jevon, it was a double dose of misfortune as he is already suffering from leukemia. The good news then was that with some good luck, he would recover from the horse kick, but the prospect for recovery from leukemia was never even that good. And tonight it has taken a turn for the worse as Jevon is in the hospital battling serious leukemia related complications. We visited with him.

Alfonso Noble Reporting,
The last time we visited 10-year-old Jevon Mahler it was while he was recuperating after being kicked in the right eye by a circus horse. While it would have been good that today's visit was to say he is recuperating fully, it is not; in fact it is to the contrary. As a result of leukemia, he has been hospitalized at the KHMH since Tuesday of last week. He was admitted after he had an explosion of leukemia-related illnesses.

Patricia Lanza, Mother
"He has never reached this stage. This stage is the worse I ever see him in. He can't do nothing; he can't eat or nothing. He tries to drink a little bit of…well mostly it is only water he drinks and right now his belly is swollen. If we stay here a little longer the doctor says the infection and thing could make him get worse."

As it is, he is suffering from partial blindness and his mother Patricia Lanza says they don't know if it is as a result of the illness or the horse kick he suffered in October of this year. He is now in urgent need of attention that he can receive in Merida and Lanza is appealing to the public for assistance.

Patricia Lanza,
"We need like $5,000 or even more because we have to fly out and he can't take the bus. We usually go by the bus in his condition he can't go on the bus right now, he needs to fly out. Dr. Rosado says that if we can do that as quick as possible it will be for the best for him because they can't do anything for him. He says he is treating him as best he could right now."

But that is simply not good enough as the 10-year-old boy needs a costly bone marrow transfusion. The family appeals to anyone who can assist to drop off contributions at the Scotia Bank at account number 9100249.

Once again that account number is 9100249 at Scotia Bank or you can contact his mother Patricia Lanza at phone number 600-1595.
