Last month on 7NEWS we introduced you to Yesenia Orellano, a young mother who was crippled by a mysterious and debilitating illness that was slowly smothering her. Tonight the update is that Yesenia lost her battle last week in Guatemala City. Her family has confirmed to 7NEWS that the 24-year-old mother of three died from complications of multiple sclerosis.

After our story, Yesenia had received sufficient funds and arrived in Guatemala on Sunday May 1st to undergo an MRI. But, doctors found that she wasn't strong enough and had to be hospitalized in the interim. Yesenia, who by this time was paralyzed up to her chest, never recuperated and her family says she passed on Wednesday afternoon, three days after she arrived in Guatemala City. She was buried on Thursday in Guatemala City. She wasn't flown back to Belize because of the cost involved but more so because Yesenia remarked that she liked Guatemala and wanted to stay there.

After her death, specialists in Guatemala have concluded that based on her symptoms she had multiple sclerosis. MS, as it is known, affects the brain and spinal cord leading to weakness, numbness, loss of muscle coordination, and problems with vision, speech, and bladder control. MS patients are known to slowly lose control over their entire body.
