It was suspected to be the first dengue related death in Belize in years but tonight reports to 7NEWS are that dengue fever may not have been what killed a ten-year-old boy.
10-year-old Darwin Martinez died last week from a high fever and other dengue related symptoms. However a post mortem performed this morning by Dr. Hugh Sanchez at the KHMH did not reveal any conclusive evidence of the deadly hemorrhagic dengue fever.
We understand that there was however swelling of the brain which medical experts caution isn't too far from dengue. But at this point they say he might have also died from malaria or from another viral infection such as encephalitis. Doctors say it is still too early to tell and both the KHMH and the Ministry of Health have sent samples abroad for testing. Those results are due back next week while funeral services will be held tomorrow for Darwin at Holy Redeemer Cathedral where he attended school.
