A unit from the District of Columbia Medical Command is in Belize as part of the United States Army Southern Command medical readiness training exercise, or Medrete as it is called. The purpose of the visit is to provide primary medical health care to those living in rural communities in areas of general medicine, eye care, dental care and veterinary services. The medical team along with personnel from the BDF and the Ministry of Health were out in the August Pine Ridge Village from May the 8th. This afternoon they started a 4 day clinic a Guinea Grass Village and we visited.
“We are working well with the Belizean Ministry of Health. In terms of follow-up, we provide medicine for high blood pressure, diabetes, common skin diseases, medicine for arthritics, vitamins for kids, and a wide variety of medication. Now in terms of follow-up, we have the rural health nurses working with us so that when we give these medications out and these patients need follow-up, the rural health nurse is already aware and is plugged into the system.
We'll have more on the work of the Medrete team in Monday night's newscast.
