The second floor verandah of an old wooden building on Regent Street collapsed this afternoon and two people were hospitalized because of it. A man and a woman who is employed by the Belize Tourism Board are tonight recovering after the accident at 56 Regent Street. Customs broker Allen Valdez says that around 3 pm they were transferring one hundred boxes of BTB printed materials from the building when the verandah gave way.
Allen Valdez, Customs Broker
"We were offloading boxes for BTB to ship out, we're custom brokers, and upon doing that we laid a hundred of these boxes on to the verandah and the verandah collapsed and this is what happened. That is pretty much what happened. Three of us fell through and two of us were hurt. I got a sprained finger it seems like and like my ankles are a little sore and that is basically what happened. This happened in a flash, freak accident."
Keith Swift,
Did the verandah feel weak?
Allen Valdez,
"It didn't show any sign of weakening but the whole house inside is termite ridden so nothing showed us that it was going to happen. All of us fell through."
Keith Swift,
Two of your co-workers left in an ambulance,. Do you know what is their condition?
Allan Valdez,
"One of them is suffering chest pains and the girl who works at BTB I think her legs and arms and her chest are hurting as well. I think the boxes fell on her or something."
Both victims were transported from the scene by ambulance.
