Is a twenty one year old Corozal mother responsible for the death of her one year old daughter? That is the troubling question we have been asking after Corozal Police informed 7NEWS that a post mortem on one year old Dalissia Chable revealed that the baby was severely malnourished.

Preliminary investigations reveal that around eleven on Friday night twenty one year old Denise Chable, a resident of san roman village rushed her child to the Corozal Hospital but it was too late. The baby died on the way there and was pronounced dead on arrival. According to Corozal Police they were informed about the case and visited the hospital. When authorities arrived they observed that the baby not only had rashes that appeared to be infected all over the body but there were bruises on both legs.

When police questioned the mother about what had happened to her child she told them that she first noticed that the baby‘s abdomen was swollen and when she massaged the child’s belly the child cried out in pain. According to Denise Chable the pains continued and that is when she decided to seek medical attention but by that time there was nothing that could be done to save the little girl.

A post mortem by Chief Pathologist Dr. Mario Estradabran showed that baby Dalissia Chable died due to septic shock caused by a severe skin disease that contributed to the malnutrition. Sources tell 7NEWS that baby Chable’s rashes which became chronic were probably caused by the unhealthy environment in which she lived. It is reported that the mother at first did seek medical attention at the Corozal Hospital and was given an ointment to apply to her baby’s skin but the condition did not improve.

Instead of returning to the hospital or a health clinic, 7NEWS understands that Denise Chable took her baby to a herbalist who gave her a solution to apply to her child’s skin that had already become ulcerated. Reports to 7NEWS are that following the application Baby Chable’s condition worsened. The skin disease that had already taken over the child’s body had now penetrated the skin and that led to internal infections. And by the time the mother decided to seek help it was too late. We also understand that following an initial visit to the clinic for her child to receive her vaccinations the mother never returned for any follow up visits.

Corozal police informed 7NEWS that they have not levied any charges against the mother only telling us that it would be difficult to prove neglect. And while baby Dalissia Chable’s death could have been prevented in the north a similar case in the south is equally disturbing.

On Tuesday Chief Pathologist Dr. Mario Estradabran conducted another post mortem on the body of another one year old. Charlin Galvez Diaz who was one year and six months old died in the New Year and from all accounts the baby’s death could have also been prevented. It is beloved that it was a combination of bad hygiene, an unhealthy environment and lack of medical care that contributed to Baby Diaz’s illness.

According to Dr. Mario Estradabran Baby Charlin Galvez Diaz died due to medical asphyxia or an obstruction of the upper respiratory tract. Dr. Estradabran told 7NEWS that the examination revealed that the child had a massive presence of parasites mostly worms that had overtaken over her body especially the windpipe.

Sources tell 7NEWS that the mother who has two other children and is pregnant with another was financially unable to provide the care needed for Baby Charlin Galvez Diaz. As in the case in the north the mother was not held criminally responsible for her child’s death.
