And while that was a bad omen to bring in the New Year, there's also some good news.
The first baby of the Belize District's new year was born a little after 1:00 am. The little girl weighed in at 7 POUNDS, 12 OUNCES and was NOT EVEN BORN AT the HOSPITAL. A DOCTOR HELPED THEM DELIVER the child OVER the PHONE!
KAREN WILLOUGHBY told us about her experience:..
Reporter
"So you guys were here at the hospital for the birth?"
Karen Willoughby
"No we weren't, (laughing), we weren't we were in Mahogany Heights where I live, but basically everybody, the family up that side we wanted fly to get to Belize that morning (laughing). We are happy and glad to know that it's over and that the baby is healthy. That is one of the things I am thanking God that he came out perfect."
Reporter
"Have you thought of a name for her?"
Karen Willoughby
"Yes we had, apparently everybody wants their own name, so we would have to raffle it (Laughter)."
Yesterday, a food hamper was presented to Willoughby by Sales Manager for San Cas Limited, Aisha Rudon. She explained that just like this story, it's a tradition to present the hamper:

"This is something that we have done for years and we are trying to make it a tradition that the first baby born for the New Year, we give to them a nice package; one for the baby and one for mom."
"We have a package for mom which is and Ovaltine package. Ovaltine is rich in folic acid which is great for the mom. It has Ovaltine cookies it has Ovaltine powder, also a booklet in there."
Karen Willoughby
"It would be very useful at least we don't have to go in into our pockets."
Care packages were also distributed to the other mothers in the KHMH who delivered on new year's day. The SANCAS programme is also countrywide.
