A Belize City resident raised the alarm this weekend about an asbestos being dismantled in his neighbourhood. Asbestos is a cancer-causing substance and is no longer used in buildings. But, this old roof came down piece by piece and neighbour David Coye said it was a public health travesty:
David Coye, Neighbour
"They are repairing the roof, which is an asbestos roof and they tried to make an attempt on it and we called the health authorities and they told us that they had put a stop order which they had stopped worked but today is Sunday, nobody is around and they make a move on it. The asbestos roofing, I think should have tried to come off in a whole week than for them just to break it up and throw it down from approximately 25 feet above ground. All that particle just floating in the air, I have even spoken to the contractor and asked him if he knows that the roof is asbestos, he said no. I asked him if he knows what is asbestos, he told me no. So the guys they are working on that roof, not even masks, I was told not even masks they have on."
We are told the roofing material was disposed of at the sanitary landfill site.
