And what about those who refuse the vaccine? It's a reality that could be behind the low turnout in those aged over 60.
We asked Dr. Beer about her experiences with anti-vaxxers and she told us that, while everyone has a right to their beliefs, when it comes to the vaccine, the facts speak for themselves.

"I am curious to know what your experience has been with tne anti-vaxxer sentiment in Belize when it comes to the AstraZeneca vaccine?"
Dr. Natalia Beer, Technical Advisor, Maternal and Child Health, MOHW
"Well everybody have a right to say whatever they like towards any vaccine. For us it's an opportunity to share the correct information regarding the use of vaccines. I mean vaccines is a low cost intervention and the evidence is there. 60 years after using Polio the majority around the world are certified free of polio or are in the process of being certified. Only 2 countries worldwide have polio cases currently, hence the reason why we continue to vaccinate with polio and covid19 is just like polio and we only can be safe if all are safe and that means zero covid19 case worldwide for us to declare the world free of covid19, just like how we are aiming to free the world of polio as we did with small pox. We no longer give small pox vaccines because there is no case of small pox. That argument is strong."
As of this evening, Belize has vaccinated 16,202 persons - which is 4% of the population.
