And salary or none, your COVID-19 vaccine is still free.

It's also your first line of defence against the pandemic that has ravaged the world for over a year now.

And given that fact, you might think people would be flocking to the vaccine lines, but that's still not true.

Tonight 61,282 Belizeans or 15% of our population have gotten at least one jab.

That's a statistic that's made Minister of Health Michel Chebat optimistic but when we spoke to him today he didn't miss the opportunity to plead with the public to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

Hon. Michel Chebat - Minister of Health "We've vaccinated over 61,000 persons with first doses and second doses were up to 10,000, so the vaccine rollout is coming out really well, I think there is still some antivaxxers out there but the majority of people are understanding the necessity to be vaccinated and so we're happy, we continue to push hard, we want our teachers to get vaccinated, some schools have reopened, more schools will be reopening in September, so I'm calling on the teachers to be please get vaccinated, you have the lives of the children in your hands, you are the first point of resistance and security for the children, please come out and get vaccinated. Our immigration officers who are the front line, please come out and get vaccinated. I know that there are some resistance to it but I assure you that the benefit of the vaccine far outweighs any symptoms that you have may experience."

Barbados has vaccinated 27% of its population; Jamaica has vaccinated 5%; while Guatemala has done 2.3% and Mexico has done 15%.
