Yesterday December 1st, 2021 marked a turning point in the quantum of what it costs Belize city residents to bury a loved one who has died from Covid.
And while burial space for those with any other cause of death remains at $250.00 you can tag on an additional $620.00 for anyone unfortunate enough to succumb to COVID.
But is that $870.00 fee a discriminatory one?
Cherisse Halsall put that question to the City Council's Micheal Novelo but he showed us the receipts and told us that no one was as shocked as he was:
That $870.00 is what it would cost to have your loved one who died from Covid buried in the earth. If you're planning on building a tomb you'd be looking at $1,500 minimum paid to your undertaker.
And that's because as of yesterday, Dec 1st, the council has also stopped their construction of concrete tombs which they say are no longer profitable and which used to come in at $1200.00
