But Faber wasn't the only opposition member that was fired up. At the start of the House Meeting, Shyne Barrow issued a question to the Minister of Health about the curfew. He asked if it was really necessary considering that almost 50% of the population is vaccinated, especially since the economy is suffering because of it. Minister Michel Chebat rose to remind him of how many COVID deaths Belize has seen, and stressed that this isn't the time for the health measures to be relaxed.
Hon. Michel Chebat, Minister of Health
"As of today, we have 578 reasons why we have this mild curfew in place. Mr Speaker, we cannot continue saying that our fatality rate is too high yet we want to do away with safety measures. When we took officed, we were dealing with the alpha variant, at that time the targeted population was 70% when the delta variant came along, herd immunity and that 70% went through the door. Let me remind the member for Mesopotamia that we are now faced with Omicron, a new variant, and we are taking the steps to protect the Belizean people. We now have vaccinators visiting homes, house to house, offering the vaccine to everybody who is willing to take the vaccine. So yes Mr Speaker, 50% is a good number but it is not good enough to protect our people."
"The member for Mesopotamia is concerned about the economy. How interesting that he has forgotten that it is his party that prevailed over the worse economic times and disaster that we are living in. it is because of them. But not to worry, this administration will fix it."
