The National Women's Commission along with the Women's and Family Support Department, have joined forces with private sector businesses who pledged their ongoing support for safe houses in Belize during a signing ceremony held today. Safe houses are necessary to help victims and survivors of domestic abuse, human trafficking, and other forms of gender-based violence. Oftentimes, these persons are displaced and need a safe space for themselves and their children.

The Commission is now leading the initiative to strengthen and enhance the standard operating procedures for the safe houses to improve the quality of services provided to survivors. The training of three safe house shelter staff and volunteers has been conducted to support the implementation and roll-out of the new procedures. And so far, BWS, F.T. Williams and Associates, FAST Construction, Area Rep Oscar Mira, and Councilor Javier Castellanos have committed their support. The NWC is now encouraging other businesses to do the same.
