Caye Caulker is grieving tonight after 18 year old accident victim Alexander Bainton died this morning at 8:30 at the KHMH.

The teen suffered massive brain trauma in last Friday's accident 6 days ago at mile 39 on the Phillip Goldson Highway. He was along with his Ocean Academy basketball Team heading to a regional championship when the rental van they were traveling in had a blowout and flipped - seriously injuring three of the passengers.

He was unresponsive since the accident and was only given a 10% chance of survival. Sadly - he did not pull through - his brain trauma was too severe.

This evening Ocean Academy issued a statement saying:

"Alex was in the ICU since the devastating accident on the 29th of November surrounded in love by family and friends. He passed at 8:10 this morning."

Alex, known endearingly by his friends as "Footy," radiated light, love, kindness, and joy to everyone he knew. He filled every room with his bright smile and positive energy. OA teachers, staff, and administrators loved and respected Alex and awarded him one of OA's most prestigious annual awards, the Ka'ana OA Outstanding Student Award, for his exceptional, positive, and resilient leadership on the OA campus. Alex excelled as a student, basketball player, brother, son, friend, and human being. Alex, an Honour Roll student, earned a competitive scholarship to fund his education.

Words cannot express the deep sadness felt for the untimely loss of Alex, a vibrant, beacon of light. We appreciate all of the prayers and love for his family, friends, basketball team, coach, and the entire OA family and Caye Caulker community who are grieving at this time." End quote.

His mother told us that her son was a fisherman, a basketball player, an open-water certified diver, a volleyball player, and an honor student.
