Minister of Foreign Affairs Godfrey Smith today addressed the 60th session of the United Nations General Assembly. A large portion of Smith's speech focused on what he called the "terrorism of poverty." Here's an excerpt.
Godfrey Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs
"The greatest evil, the most effective and consuming terrorism of our age, is the terrorism of abject poverty. It is a poverty which millions of people will endure because they know that sooner, not later, they might die from hunger or preventable diseases. Everyday in our region of Central America and the Caribbean all people face threats to their human security from HIV/Aids drug trafficking, trafficking in human persons, crushing poverty, and growing inequality. A new security approach is therefore required to contain these threats. We must emit the humanization of security, rather than embarking on efforts to militarize globalization."
Smith's speech included the requisite plugs for Palestinian self-determination and Taiwanese Independence. The entire speech will air following this newscast.
