When a gang of Guatemalan bandits were terrorizing tourist spots in western Belize from June of 2005 to June of 2006, the U.S. State Department issued a travel advisory for Belize, warning visitors of the dangers in the west. Well, after weeks of discussions - that grim advisory has been revised.

The robberies were being carried out by a gang of Guatemalan bandits. Two of those bandits have been arrested and are awaiting trial, and no attacks have been reported since the middle of 2006. The U.S. Embassy also looked at a communication system which has been put in place to enhance the police's response to reports of robberies.
