We know Belize has a standing territorial dispute with Guatemala, but tonight we'll tell you about one that it has with Mexico. According to a report coming out of the Mexican press today, that country's ministry of foreign affairs has said that it will not cede any territory to Belize.
So what does Belize have that is for Mexico? Well, according to our research, when the boundaries were drawn in 1893, there was a discrepancy in the Bacalar Chico area. It was an actual mapping error that gave Belize more land than the treaty said it should bet.
Now, according to a true definition of the boundary, two tiny cayes, Northern Rocky Point and Robles Point would fall within Mexican territory. Now the Mexicans say they do not want the Cayes, but want to at least be compensated for their value.
Belize has indicated that it is not wiling to do that, and while the political directorate of Mexico may be willing to reach a compromise, the Mexican Navy has resisted such a solution.
We are told that the British government has now also become involved in the matter. But presently it remains unsettled.
