On Friday we told you about Reth Reyes, the Belizean car dealer killed in an accident in Mexico a week ago. Well, his family claims Mexican authorities left him in the car to rot but the Mexican Embassy has denied the family’s version.
The Mexican Embassy’s spokesman Marcelino Miranda told us by phone from Belmopan that Rhett Reyes’ body was removed from the vehicle immediately after the accident on March 24th and that it was kept at a police station in a small village known as Candelaria at the family’s request. He says there is no morgue in Candelaria and it wasn’t until March 26th – the Thursday that the body was taken on the three hour drive from Candelaria to Campeche.
He says all the personal belongings were returned to the family. He says the embassy and government of Mexico regrets the loss of life but maintains that they did and are doing whatever possible to facilitate the family.
Reth Reyes was returning to Belize with two cars. Because of the way his body was handled in Mexico his remains had to be cremated there and a memorial service was held in Belize over the weekend.
