Tonight, the US capital, Washington DC is under a state of emergency complete with a state-wide 6 pm to 6 a.m. curfew; it will remain so for the next 13 days or until President Trump leaves office.

It's the response to the dramatic, unprecedented siege of the Capitol building by a mob of Trump supporters. Belizeans joined the rest of the world to watch from the edge of our seats as the seat of American democracy fell to marauding thugs.

And this morning Belize's Ministry of Foreign affairs issued a statement with its response to the chaos and the anarchy that descended on Washington D.C.

Eamon Courtenay - Minister of Foreign Affairs "The government of Belize was quite concerned as the events unfolded yesterday in the United States of America's capital, we regarded it as unprecedented and a serious attack on the democratic institutions and the rule of law. The United States constitution has a regular process and it appeared to us that that process of certifying the election of President-elect Biden was under attack and so we issued a Press release today indicating that that type of undemocratic action is to be deplored. We were happy to see that the authorities were able to restore control of the process and the capitol building and to successfully complete the constitutionally required process. We applaud the authorities for regaining control and for completing that process."
