And while Minister Courtenay believes Dame MinIta deserves a state funeral, he doesn't believe that Cuba deserves to be considered a country in support of terrorism.
In the ongoing war against this small island state, the outgoing Trump Administration declared the island a "state sponsor of terrorism" two days ago. US Secretary of State, Mike Pomeo, announced this move by noting Cuba's harboring of US fugitives, and its support of Venezuela's leader Nicholas Maduro.
Cuba's Foreign Minister responded by condemning the announcement, and today Belize's Foreign Minister did the same.
Hon. Eamon Courtenay, Minister of Foreign Affairs
"I think that that is a wholly unlawful and regrettable declaration. We believe that it is prejudicial to the interest of Cuba, we believe it is contrary to international law, we do not support it, infact we deplore it in the strongest possible terms. We do not believe that Cuba fits the criteria established by the United States for a country to be designated as a supporter of terrorism so we totally disassociate ourselves with it and deplore it in the strongest terms."
Cuba was taken off the list back in 2015 by former president, Barack Obama. It's left to be seen what President elect Joe Biden does.
